Three more veterans have just joined the lineup for ADCC 2024 after being invited to compete in different divisions at the world’s most prestigious no gi grappling tournament. The roster is growing every day as the various editions of ADCC Trials come to an end and the promotion announces the elite competitors who they have awarded invites to. Another two men and one woman have now been added and all three of them have a ton of experience under the ADCC ruleset, including past appearances at the world championship.
The under 66kg division will also have a seasoned competitor in the ranks, as Ethan Crelinsten has been announced as the next name in the division. Crelinsten initially won ADCC Trials back in 2017 and earned the right to compete at the world championship that year, where he went 1-1 at under 66kg. He won ADCC Trials for the second time in 2018 and although he couldn’t make it to ADCC 2019, he was invited to return in 2022. He lost the opening round match of the under 66kg division, but he immediately got back to work and entered ADCC Trials once again the following year. Crelinsten may not have won the division this time but he put in a brilliant performance to earn a bronze medal and that was enough to show he belonged back on the main stage.
The second invite was given to Tye Ruotolo, who will be competing at ADCC for the third time in his career. He first competed at under 66kg back in 2019 and put in a fantastic performance despite being just a 16 year old blue belt at the time. He went 2-2 and finished fourth in the division, securing himself another opportunity to compete at ADCC 2022 in the process. He competed at under 88kg on his second appearance and although he went out in the opening round, he made up for it with a brilliant performance in the absolute division that saw him win a bronze medal. Now he will be returning to the under 88kg division once again, with the goal of improving on his first two placements.
The final name in this recent batch of invites is Mayssa Bastos, one of the best female competitors on the planet in her weight class. Bastos made her promotional debut at ADCC 2022 after putting in a fantastic performance at the second South American Trials that year and winning a place in the under 60kg. Bastos normally competes at a much lighter weight than that though and the size difference was clear when she lost her opening round match. Now that ADCC has added an additional women’s weight class, Bastos has been invited to compete in the new under 55kg division where she is far better suited to compete.
ADCC announced the news that Ethan Crelinsten, Tye Ruotolo, and Mayssa Bastos were joining the other veterans invited to ADCC 2024 in a series of posts to their official Instagram account:
