The bracket for the $20,000 Grand Prix at 3CG 6 is now finally half-full as reigning Submission Underground Absolute Champion Mason Fowler has just been added to the event. He joins some huge names in the tournament that started off by announcing one of the most terrifying purple belts in BJJ, Nicky Rodriguez. It didn’t take long at all for Third Coast Grappling to pick up the pace with their competitor announcements and Rodriguez was quickly followed by one of ATOS’ most prolific competitors, Kaynan Duarte.
William Tackett was the third man to be announced for the tournament and although he may not be as universally well-known as the first two, he represents just as much of a difficult challenge to overcome. Mason Fowler doesn’t compete in tournament-style events as often as the rest of the 3CG 6 competitors that have been announced so far, but he’s had a huge amount of success fighting for Submission Underground in the past. His biggest moments came in back-to-back events at SUG 17 and 18 where he avenged an earlier loss to Craig Jones by taking the Absolute Championship from him and then defending it against him successfully.
Fowler didn’t stop there however, as he also fought at SUG 19, where he defended his title against one of the biggest legends of Japanese MMA history and an Olympic Champion Judoka, Satoshi Ishii. He also fought again in the final Submission Underground event of the year, SUG 20 just before new year’s eve. There he fought against Bellator Heavyweight World Champion and experienced wrestler Ryan Bader, managing to secure the finish in a little under two minutes against the larger man.
