This article is part of our week of ADCC 2022 coverage. To get live results, play by play, and commentary, we’ll have a live updates article running all weekend.

ADCC 2022 is just a matter of weeks away and although the full competitor list has already been announced, anything can happen to the athletes before they step on to the mats and the promotion has prepared by putting together a list of alternates who are ready to step in on a moment’s notice. Fans have already seen just how vital these athletes actually are to the event going ahead as planned, given that Magid Hage was the original alternate at 77kg and he has already been called up to replace Lucas Lepri in the division.

The fact that the ADCC world championships has athletes willing to wait on standby just in case they are needed is a real testament to just how prestigious the event actually is. These are men and women who are willing to put themselves through a gruelling fight camp leading up to the event and monitor their weight the whole time, just in case a spot opens up for them. The list of alternates are all elite competitors too, athletes who wouldn’t look out of place headlining a fight card or going home with a gold medal in the majority of tournaments that they enter.

Just like the other athletes who are already scheduled to compete at ADCC 2022, the alternates come from every corner of the world. The US still has the majority of athletes, including both of the female alternates in Jasmine Rocha and Paige Ivette and under and over 60kg respectively. Meanwhile in the men’s divisions, B-Team’s Damien Anderson is waiting in the wings for 66kg and Alex Grandy is ready at over 99kg. The only Brazilian in the alternates list is Andre Porfirio at 88kg, while the Europeans Mateusz Szczecinski and Owen Livesey are on standby for 77kg and 99kg, hailing from Poland and England respectively.

The official list of alternates for ADCC 2022 was announced across several posts made to the promotion’s official Instagram account:
