Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal are now officially going to have a rematch on June 1st, 2024, and there will be a change of pace for their second fight as it will be contested under boxing rules instead. Although this might come as a bit of a surprise for some fans of the sport, this isn’t actually the first time that this idea has come up. One of the most reputable MMA journalists in the world, Ariel Helwani, actually confirmed at the beginning of the year that this fight was in the works and now he’s been proven correct with the recent announcement.
Although both of them are among the most popular UFC fighters to ever set foot in the cage, they both also have some prior boxing experience. They have both had a single professional boxing match, although their short time in the sport was significantly different. Masvidal competed in a boxing match back in 2005 that he won by majority decision, long before he ever competed for major MMA promotions like StrikeForce and Bellator. Diaz on the other hand actually made his professional boxing debut far more recently than that, as he competed against YouTube star Jake Paul and lost a unanimous decision.
This boxing rematch is almost 5 years in the making too, as Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal originally met in the main event of UFC 244 back in 2019. They battled it out over three hard-fought rounds before the doctor stopped the fight due to a cut above Diaz’s eye and Masvidal was ruled the winner by TKO. Now they will be able to settle the score under a different ruleset on June 1st, 2024, as the two men will be fighting over ten rounds in the light-heavyweight division.
The official trailer for the boxing rematch between Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal was uploaded to the official YouTube channel of FanMio, who will be hosting the PPV:
