Gilbert Burns just put in an impressive performance at UFC 287 and demanded a title-shot in the post-fight interview he gave in the cage. It’s hard to deny Burns too, considering that he just walked through Jorge Masvidal with relative ease and won a unanimous decision in convincing fashion. The pair were booked to compete in the co-main event of the night, shortly before Israel Adesanya regained his title from his old rival Alex Pereira. Even before this fight was booked, Dana White had spoken about Colby Covington getting the next title-shot in the UFC welterweight division in the post-event interview of UFC 286:
“I don’t know when we’ll do it, but yeah, that’s the fight that makes sense. And Colby came here and cut weight, and did everything to be here for this fight. He deserves this fight – not to mention the fact that he’s the second or third best guy in the world.”
But after Gilbert Burns dominated Jorge Masvidal at UFC 287 he immediately called for a title-shot in the division, what would be his second attempt at the belt:
“Man I’m the only guy, the only guy maybe in the whole UFC, that’s willing to fight anyone at any time. You guys know that. You know if they call me to fight the devil, what am I gonna say Joe (Rogan)?”
That brought a little laugh from Rogan as he quickly said that Burns would agree. He moved on then and staked his claim at the next title-shot, although he seems aware that Covington may be up just before him:
“With that being said, Leon Edwards, Colby Covington, whoever is holding that belt I’m coming for you. I’m not taking no other fight, only the title-fight.”
