Who’s Number One 22: Nicky Rodriguez vs Victor Hugo took place on February 9th, 2024 and there was some huge results on the night. Alongside the blockbuster main event, there was also a co-main event title-fight that saw Mica Galvao put his welterweight belt on the line for the last time before he moves up in weight. There was a stacked main card with several other exciting matches long before that, and perhaps the most notable one was a champion vs champion title-fight between Dante Leon and Diego ‘Pato’ Oliveira. The card delivered on all the promise it had too, as there were several lightning-quick finishes and fantastic performances by elite competitors.
There were some great matches on the preliminary card of Who’s Number One 22 too, but the grappler that stood out the most in the results was Daniel Sathler. He came out looking for the finish immediately against Max Hanson, leaping into a flying triangle choke before transitioning to an armbar to get the win in a little over a minute. The main card opened with Jacob Couch keeping up that momentum as he locked up a heel hook against Sebastian Rodriguez in just under a minute and a half. Although there was plenty of competition, the quickest finish of the night came just came from late-replacement Adele Fornarino caught Amanda ‘Tubby’ Alequin with an Aoki Lock after 24 seconds of action.
Tainan Dalpra was taking on the biggest challenge of his no gi career so far against Oliver Taza and he passed that test with flying colors in the end. He showed off some solid wrestling skills and landed several single-leg takedowns against Taza throughout the match, eventually getting the decision win. Undoubtedly the biggest story of the night came immediately after that though, as Diego ‘Pato’ Oliveira was relentless in attacking Dante Leon’s legs before finding the heel hook finish. This meant that Oliveira had moved up in weight to face one of the best grapplers in the world and had emerged as the promotion’s newest double champion.
The next title-fight was just as exciting too, as both Mica Galvao and Kenta Iwamoto got to showcase their impressive skills. Iwamoto showed exactly why he’s one of the best wrestlers in his weight class as he was able to go head-to-head with Galvao and win a lot of exchanges on the feet. Unfortunately for him, Galvao was constantly threatening the submission when counter-wrestling and was eventually able to find the finish to retain his title. Victor Hugo vs Nicky Rodriguez was the only match left and although it was pretty close, a deep armbar appeared to be what swung the judges in Hugo’s favor to give him the decision win.
