The IBJJF Milan Open 2024 took place on March 23rd, 2024 and some of the most exciting BJJ competitors from all around Europe entered the tournament. Unfortunately, the event was actually scheduled for the same weekend as the black belt divisions of the IBJJF Pan Championship 2024 so naturally there weren’t many gi grapplers traveling from further afield. There was still some busy weight classes and plenty of action in the gi divisions on the first day though, particularly from Henrique Betta as he managed to stand on top of both the super-heavyweight and absolute podiums.
The ultra-heavyweight champion Tacio Carneres had to settle for a silver medal in the absolute division, while top UK competitor Bradley Hill won a bronze medal there shortly after taking silver at medium-heavyweight. Max Li beat Hill in the final of their weight class to win gold, and Matheus Rangel won gold at middleweight. Rangel actually returned on the second day of the IBJJF Milan Open 2024 to compete in the no gi middleweight bracket as well, although he had left with a silver medal behind Liam Alpang. Alpang was flawless on the second day in fact, as he also won a gold medal in the absolute division after beating Max Bickerton in the final.
Jonas Andrade made an appearance on both days too, winning silver in the gi light-featherweight division and gold in the no gi edition. There were some exciting women’s matches in the gi too, although not one match could be made in the black belt no gi brackets. There were no double champions though, as Gabi Schuck won the absolute division after taking silver at middleweight. Schuck actually beat the default medium-heavyweight champion Magdalena Loska in the final, while Gabriela Pereira also left with a default gold medal in the lightweight division earlier in the day.
