Bobby Green just put in a classic performance at UFC 291 on July 29th, 2023 when choked out Tony Ferguson with an arm-triangle choke in the final seconds of their fight. Both men are veteran MMA fighters and talented grapplers so submitting either one of them was always going to be tough, and Ferguson in particular is known for being incredibly resilient. That’s part of the beauty of chokes of course, no matter how much someone might want to tough it out they only ever have a set amount of time before they eventually get put to sleep.
Both Bobby Green and Tony Ferguson have been fighting in the UFC for over a decade and they now have 80 professional fights between the two of them. Despite that incredible level of experience, they have also both fallen on tougher times in their careers in recent years. Ferguson was coming into this fight on a five-fight losing streak and although he apparently made some big changes to his preparation beforehand, he’s also 39 years old and definitely coming towards the end of his career.
Green on the other hand was winless in his last 3 fights, with 2 losses and 1 no contest. While Green is a few years younger than Ferguson, he’s also deep into his 30s as well and at the lighter weight classes it’s often tough to compete at the highest level. Both men looked to be in great shape coming into the fight though and Ferguson even got the upper hand at one point in the first round, knocking Green down. Green was able to win the striking exchanges at range though and landed several heavy shots on the ground over the course of three rounds, before locking up a tight arm-triangle choke in the final round. Green squeezed hard and with just 6 seconds left on the clock, Ferguson slipped into unconsciousness.
