Submission Underground 23 saw Mason Fowler turn away yet another challenger to his status as SUG absolute champion as he finished 10th Planet’s Kyle Chambers within the regulation period. Chambers attempted an Imanari roll early in the match and when that failed, worked his way back to his feet to defend against the threat of Fowler passing. From there, Fowler forced the action against the cage and lifted Chambers into the air, slamming him to the mat and quickly passing to North-south. He then lifted Chambers’ shoulders to expose his back and worked incredibly fast to wrap up a body-triangle and sink in the fight-ending choke.

While the SUG absolute championship is incredibly consistent, being held by two long-reigning champions in Craig Jones and now Mason Fowler, the SUG tag-team championship is incredibly volatile. The format only returned at SUG 21 and although American Top Team came out on top, they lost the title at the very next event to Chris Lencioni and Owen Papworth of Team SAC. Now the title has changed hands once again, proving that it’s incredibly hard for any team to hold onto the title after winning it as Team SAC lost out to Anthony Birchak and Deon Clash, representing Team Toro.
