The IBJJF No Gi World Championship 2023 has come to an end and as usual, the results have produced some fantastic storylines in every division. There was plenty of action before the black belts stepped on the mats too, as UFC veteran Miranda Maverick put in some fantastic work at brown belt even though she had to settle for a silver medal in the end. Undoubtedly the most impressive brown belt performance of the weekend came from Luke Griffith, who submitted every opponent to win double gold. None of the men competing at black belt were able to repeat that feat and win two divisions but one woman was able to do so, and she made IBJJF history in the process.
Ffion Davies became the first European to win the absolute division and to become a double champion at the IBJJF No Gi World Championship, just five years after she became the first to win any division at the event. Roberto Jimenez was the men’s absolute champion but he had to settle for a bronze medal in the heavyweight division, where Elder Cruz stood on top of the podium. There was even more variety in the nationality of the men’s champions than ever before, with Javier Zaruski winning super-heavyweight and Tommy Langaker winning middleweight.
Edwin ‘Junny’ Ocasio was actually the only American champion, as he won the light-featherweight division in impressive fashion. Only half of the winners were Brazilian, with most of them being on the lighter end of the scale. Everton Teixeira and Lucas Valente won their first titles at roosterweight and lightweight respectively, while the featherweight division saw a return to glory for Diego ‘Pato’ Oliveira. The medium-heavyweight division was won by Ronaldo Junior and the final champion in the ultra-heavyweight division was Roosevelt Sousa.
The women’s divisions featured less surprises, as most of the favorites managed to win gold. Alex Enriquez put in a great performance to win featherweight, but outside of that there weren’t too many surprises. Roosterweight was won by Mayssa Bastos again and Tammi Musumeci won her fifth title at light-featherweight, while Kendall Reusing returned to win her second title at super-heavyweight. Andressa Cintra successfully defended her heavyweight title, while Ffion Davies started her history-making performance by winning the lightweight division again. The final two champions were Gabrielle McComb and Elizabeth Mitrovic, who won gold medals at middleweight and medium-heavyweight respectively.
