Grace Gundrum is 10th Planet’s youngest star in the making and she gets a huge opportunity to compete for the Flyweight title against Pati Fontes at Fight 2 Win 155. This matchup continues something of a trend for the American promotion as they have recently started to feature very young but promising grapplers against much more experienced opposition for championship belts. This event comes as Fight 2 Win have been given the go ahead from the city of Philadelphia to hold events, starting in October.
Gundrum has only recently been awarded with her black belt from 10th Planet’s head coach and founder, Eddie Bravo. This makes her part of a really promising generation of elite grapplers waving the 10th Planet banner in competition, being joined by Keith Krikorian just recently as well. Despite only being promoted back in July, the young Gundrum has already made a name for herself by competing against top-tier black belts in competition after beating Cynthia Calvillo in just 17 seconds at Quintet Ultra, and beating Danielle Kelly in a superfight at the Jiu-Jitsu Overtime event.
The opposition that Grace Gundrum faces is no easy match however, as Pati Fontes has won the IBJJF No Gi World Championships for three consecutive years from 2015 to 2017. Not only does she have the edge in high-level competition experience, Fontes has also been more active of late and has fought on the Fight 2 Win mats before. As recently as Fight 2 Win 153, Fontes was competing against another elite female black belt in Amanda “Tubby” Alequin, although she ended up on the losing end of an incredibly tough match.
