Gordon Ryan is no stranger to overcoming some adversity in the sport of BJJ and now he’s shared his methods of dealing with an injury. Most recently, Ryan became one of many combat sports athletes who came down with a case of Coronavirus and he revealed that although it didn’t hit him too hard, it did cause him to lose his sense of smell for quite some time. Prior to this, he had a few more conventional encounters with injuries when he ruptured his LCL and strained his Biceps Femoris Tendon in a match with Joao Gabriel Rocha at the Kasai Super Series, he also then broke his hand not long after this and shortly prior to ADCC 2019.
It seems as though the advice Gordon Ryan has for dealing with an injury must be worth something, as he went on to win both his weight and absolute division at ADCC 2019 despite not even being fully recovered at the time. If you do suffer some sort of injury, it goes without saying that the first course of action should always be to consult a professional and get proper medical advice for how to proceed. While doctors will almost universally err on the side of caution, an armchair diagnosis is never good enough for you to decide your own actions and you will always need to be properly assessed.
Alongside this, there’s plenty of equipment available for preventing and rehabilitating injuries, with a lot of this has come a long way over the last few years. This means that there’s now plenty of opportunities available to the average person to help speed up their recovery compared to even as little as a few years ago.
