Demian Maia has just been booked to compete against Sangwook Kim in the main event superfight of the Spyder BJJ ‘Road to Black’ final on February 12th, 2023. Maia is a truly incredible grappler who ended up becoming more well-known for his success in MMA than anything else. He officially retired from MMA competition back in August 2021, but Maia had often said that he would return to professional grappling once his MMA career was over. He’s been true to his word since then and has competed in grappling matches for several different promotions all around the world.
This will actually mark the first time in almost a year that Maia has competed in any form of combat sports though, as he was last seen defeating Benson Henderson in the main event superfight Polaris 20. Although he’s been out of competition, Maia has still been incredibly busy regardless. He recently got the invitation to join the UFC Fight Pass Brazil commentary team, and he has still been training regularly outside of that as well. He actually spent some time training with Mica Galvao to help him prepare for his debut appearance at ADCC 2022.
Spyder BJJ has already announced the rest of the card that will be supporting the fantastic superfight between Demian Maia and Sangwook Kim at the ‘Road to Black’ final. The event will feature two stacked tournaments in the under 65kg and under 75kg divisions, with each on including eight of the best grapplers on the planet at those weightclasses. With top athletes like Fabricio Andrey, Andy Murasaki, Lucas Pinheiro, and Marcio Andre all competing, the event is shaping up to be a fantastic night of grappling action.
