Demian Maia and Mica Galvao are two of the best Brazilian grapplers of their respective generations, and the two athletes have been rolling together in training recently. They were training together during Galvao’s preparation for ADCC 2022, his first attempt at glory at the world’s most prestigious no gi grappling tournament. Although it was Galvao’s first attempt, he put in an incredible performance right from the start. Galvao defeated Oliver Taza on points in the opening round before submitting Renato Canuto with an armbar and beating Dante Leon on points. Although Galvao was heelhooked by Kade Ruotolo in the final, he had already made a massive statement and a silver medal at ADCC 2022 was an incredible achievement.
Galvao actually came within inches of making history at the tournament by becoming the youngest ever champion, although that honour went to Ruotolo instead. With an epic match in the final, both young men announced to the world that there was a new generation of top competitors in the 77kg division. It seems like whatever preparation that Mica Galvao did massively paid off, and now it seems that at least some of that involved bringing in one of the best grapplers to ever transition to MMA, Demian Maia.
Of course Maia isn’t just a UFC veteran, he’s also a highly-accomplished BJJ competitor as well. In fact, he actually won an ADCC world title himself all the way back in 2007 so he knows what it takes to step onto those very same mats and emerge victorious. Not only would Maia definitely be able to offer some valuable insight to help Galvao’s career, but he’s also an incredibly useful training partner to have as well. While this training session was certainly a great experience for both men, it’s even better for the fans who get to see two elite competitors from entirely different generations training alongside one another.
