Brianna Ste-Marie and Mayssa Bastos delivered exciting results while they made history this past weekend as the very first women to ever headline a Who’s Number One event. Both women were veterans of the under 60kg division at the 2022 ADCC world championships where Ste-Marie came away with a silver medal, although they didn’t actually cross paths at the event. Ste-Marie has been a rising star for quite some time and the Canadian grappler reminded fans exactly why she belongs at the highest levels of the sport at Who’s Number One, by outworking multiple-time IBJJF gi and no gi world champion Mayssa Bastos to a unanimous decision victory.
Ste-Marie wasn’t the only Canadian competing either, as B-Team’s Ethan Crelinsten put on a fantastic display against Fabricio Andrey. He managed to beat him by rear-naked choke in the first match on the main card, shortly after his teammate Jozef Chen submitted Derek Rayfield with a Z lock. B-Team weren’t able to leave with a perfect record on the night though, as Damien Anderson dropped a decision to the talented young grappler Cole Abate. Elsewhere on the card, New Wave Jiu Jitsu representative Luke Griffith scored an incredibly impressive heelhook win over Haisam Rida in just a matter of seconds; registering the second-fastest win on the WNO stage. The co-main event then saw Jacob ‘The Hillbilly Hammer’ Couch stepping up on short notice to take on Bruno Matias, and he also got the submission win by locking up a guillotine against his opponent.
