The IBJJF San Diego Summer Open 2023 took place on August 5th and 6th, 2023, and naturally the tournament attracted a ton of top talent. It’s no surprise really given the location, as there are several major academies nearby like Legion Jiu-Jitsu and of course, ATOS headquarters. ATOS in particular came away with quite a few medals from the gi divisions on the first day, as Andy Murasaki and Pedro Machado both won gold at medium-heavyweight and heavyweight respectively. Murasaki had a tough final match against Mathias Luna too, shortly before Luna took bronze in the absolute. Fellipe Andrew was the man who went on to win the absolute division though.
There high-level action in every division though, with Renato Tagliari winning gold at ultra-heavyweight and Janaina Lebre beating Thamires Monteiro in the final of the women’s middleweight division. There was a great matchup in the final of the women’s absolute division too, with Melissa Stricker beating Gabrielle McComb after both women took a default gold from their regular weight classes. The second day of the tournament was no different, as several top no gi grapplers took to the mats to compete. Mathias Luna returned and took a default gold at medium-heavyweight before earning a silver medal in the absolute, only losing out to ADCC veteran Elder Cruz.
Thamires Monteiro also returned on the second day of the IBJJF San Diego Summer Open 2023 and although she had to settle for a default gold at middleweight, she won the no gi absolute division. Eliot Kelly won gold at super-heavyweight and UFC veteran Wilson Reis made a surprising appearance at the tournament, winning the Master 1 no gi lightweight division. Every division was full of top grapplers and a ton of exciting matches took place at the tournament, giving fans plenty to enjoy to on both days.
