The IBJJF Dallas Summer Open 2023 took place on the weekend of August 5th and 6th, 2023, with several top grapplers making the journey to Texas to compete. One of the best Checkmat competitors made a huge impact in the tournament as Samuel Nagai won a gold medal in the lightweight division and a bronze medal in the absolute division on the first day, followed by a gold medal in the no gi lightweight division the next day. His brother Jackson Nagai also competed in the gi, winning the middleweight division.
The absolute division on the first day was won by Cassio Costa, who had also earned a gold medal from the super-heavyweight division earlier on. Pedro Alex took the silver medal from the absolute division, shortly after losing to Ricardo Evangelista in the final of the ultra-heavyweight division and earning a silver medal there too. The other man standing on the podium was Francisco Lo, who had to settle for a bronze medal after winning the heavyweight division. Lo returned on the following day and got a default gold medal at heavyweight, but he won the no gi absolute division with a series of impressive performances.
There wasn’t many competitors in the women’s divisions at the IBJJF Dallas Summer Open 2023, and every adult black belt weight class ended up with a default winner. There were a few exciting matches in the absolute divisions though, with Vitoria Assis winning the gi absolute and settling for a silver medal in the no gi absolute against Deise Leonanjo. There were quite a few talented older competitors in the master divisions too, particularly in the medium-heavyweight division. Jaime Canuto won gold in the master 1 gi medium-heavyweight division and the bronze medalist at that weight was none other than Alexandre Vieira. There was high-level grappling in almost every division and plenty of solid performances everywhere at the event.
