Third Coast Grappling 6 marked a new adventure for one of the newest promotions in America as they branched out on their own and started to host events as pay-per-views rather than as part of FloGrappling. All-in-all the event should be considered a success from a fan perspective, it delivered a night of elite grappling action and although there weren’t many submissions, it isn’t all that unusual when top-tier competitors meet that neither will be able to find the finish. It’s a fine price to pay considering that the eight men competing in the absolute tournament are all among the best grapplers available.
There were a few fights ended via Technical Fall, a rule borrowed from wrestling for Third Coast Grappling matches whereby a big enough points-lead results in the match being called off and a winner declared. Although this goes against one of the basic concepts of Jiu-Jitsu, where everyone has a chance to win by submission no matter how bad the match is going, it does serve the purpose of moving the card along without seeing a long and drawn-out domination.
The highlight of the night was Kaynan Duarte’s flawless run to take home the grand prize of $15,000 and although he didn’t submit any of his opponents, defeating Aaron “Tex” Johnson, Mason Fowler, and Victor Hugo all on the same night is a huge achievement in itself. John Combs worked his back-attacking game to perfection in his superfight to end up finishing Andy Cordova with a Rear-Naked Choke while Lucas Valente scored the only other submission in the regulation period when he locked up a Straight Footlock against Justin Renick.
