Registration is now officially open for the IBJJF World Championship 2023, with the event scheduled to take place between June 1st and 4th, 2023. The organization announced the news that the event would be taking place in The Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, California once again and confirmed the date for it earlier this year. This will be the event available to adult competitors of course, with masters competitors getting their own version later on in the year. The IBJJF Masters World Championship will take place from August 31st to September 2nd, 2023 instead.
The IBJJF World Championship is the world’s biggest BJJ tournament in the gi and the annual event always attracts the biggest names in the sport, delivering days of high-level action to the fans watching. As always, a lot of eyes will be on the champions from the previous edition of the event to see if they’re able to retain their titles and emerge victorious once again. Naturally though, there will be a whole new generation of elite black belt competitors ready to challenge them in an attempt to take their crown.
It’ll be interesting to see if Tainan Dalpra can extend his incredible reign of dominance in the middleweight division and win yet another major title to add to his collection, and if Nicholas Meregali chooses to continue his return to gi competition. It’s almost a certainty that Gabrieli Pessanha will be looking to become double champion once again, although there will be plenty of top female grapplers attempting to dethrone her. It’s been a good year for gi competition already in 2023, and the IBJJF World Championship represents the peak of that movement.
