The 2022 edition of the IBJJF World Championships have come to an end and now a new generation of champions have been crowned. Gabrieli Pessanha came away with the highest honour from the week by winning gold in both her weightclass and the absolute division, while Nicholas Meregali and Erich Munis battled it out in the final of both the Super-Heavyweight and absolute divisions only to split the victories between them. The most historic performances of the week came in the women’s Lightweight division however, where Ffion Davies stormed to victory over tough opposition to become the first British person to win an IBJJF world championship gold medal.
While there were some first-time winners like Davies on the podium, there was also a number of returning champions too. Tainan Dalpra successfully defended his Middleweight title, as did Kaynan Duarte at Heavyweight, Victor Hugo at Ultra-Heavyweight, and the aforementioned Erich Munis. In the women’s divisions, both Mayssa Bastos and Ana Rodrigues defended their titles in the lightest divisions while Andressa Cintra and Ana Vieira did the same at Middleweight and Medium-Heavyweight respectively. Pessanha has now come away with four gold medals from her first two attempts of the IBJJF world championships and at the age of just 22 she is well on her way to surpassing Bia Mesquita’s record of ten gold medals.
