Mica Galvao will be defending his welterweight title once again as he takes on Tommy Langaker in yet another tough matchup at Who’s Number One 23 on May 10th, 2024. Galvao first won the title in a stacked four-man tournament at WNO 20: Night of Champions, where he beat both Jacob Rodriguez and PJ Batch on the same night in flawless performances. He hasn’t stopped since then as this will be the third time that Galvao has put his title on the line and the fourth consecutive WNO event that he’s competed at, marking the latest step in what has been a grueling competition schedule for the young star.
Galvao wasted no time in returning after first winning the vacant belt and his first defense took place at Who’s Number One 21, where he submitted Kody Steele in one of the most exciting matches of the year. Although Galvao has long been considered one of the top competitors in his weight class, this series of matches really helped to cement that status. He returned once again at Who’s Number One 22 and although there was a change of opponent at the last minute, he put on yet another fantastic show in submitting Kenta Iwamoto.
Langaker on the other hand has been just as busy in that same space of time, as he unsuccessfully challenged Kade Ruotolo for the lightweight title twice. He did manage to win one of the biggest titles of his career so far at the end of 2023 though, as he emerged victorious in the middleweight division of the IBJJF No Gi World Championship. He hasn’t showed any signs of slowing down either as most recently, Langaker put in a great performance to earn an ADCC 2024 invite by winning the under 77kg division at the ADCC European Trials. Seeing as Galvao will almost certainly receive an invite as the last silver medalist there, this match might be the first of a series between these two men.
