Mason Fowler made a huge statement in a recent interview when he decided to call out one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time, Georges St-Pierre, for a grappling match. St-Pierre should need no introduction of course as he has cemented himself as one of the faces on MMA’s Mount Rushmore with the most impressive Welterweight title-run in history and a fairytale comeback that resulted in him winning the promotion’s Middleweight title as well. He won everything that was feasibly possible for him to win and avenged the only two losses he ever suffered, riding off into the sunset at the end of what could reasonably be called a perfect career.
Despite his retirement, Georges St-Pierre has kept incredibly active and still trains regularly so would likely have no problem preparing for a grappling match against Mason Fowler if he wanted to. Fowler is the reigning Submission Underground (SUG) Absolute Champion and is actively looking for competitors to defend his title against after beating the best grapplers who regularly appear for the promotion. For this reason, he was asked about the potential for a match with St-Pierre and his response was more than a little enthusiastic:
“That would be amazing, Georges St-Pierre is one of my idols. Georges, if you’re bored with retirement and you want to do a grappling match on UFC Fightpass, I would be more than happy to engage with you. There’s my respectful call out.”
While this might seem like something of a pipe-dream, SUG has a history of booking successful MMA fighters in their grappling matches and St-Pierre is still young and active enough to compete in any combat sport he chooses. The interview with Mason Fowler was posted on the official YouTube channel of Third Coast Grappling, ahead of his upcoming appearance on Third Coast Grappling 6 where he will compete in their absolute grand prix.
