Submission Underground 19 is the very last event that Chael Sonnen’s promotion will put on in 2020 and they’ve pulled out all the stops and stacked the card with some of the best MMA fighters around. The card was originally going to feature Sean O’Malley after Sonnen issued an open challenge to fight the young UFC star but after James Gallagher accepted the challenge, he revealed that O’Malley had decided not to go ahead with the match. The card still features plenty of huge names however, even on the preliminary portion of the event.
After recently earning the 4th degree on his black belt, Rafael Dos Anjos will take on fellow submission wizard Donald Cerrone at the event. Alongside this phenomenal pairing is an unusual choice of matchup as Anthony “Rumble” Johnson faces off against ex-UFC Heavyweight World Champion and IBJJF World Champion, Fabricio Werdum. There will also be another match between experienced Heavyweights as NCAA wrestler and Bellator World Champion Ryan Bader will take on a man who recently earned the first stripe on his BJJ blue belt, Derrick Lewis.
The Co-Main event will then mark the first time that Submission Underground has had a women’s title on the line as Amanda Loewen competes against ex-Invicta FC World Champion and UFC title-challenger, Felicia Spencer. Loewen has had a stellar run in the SUG cage before this opportunity and is also an experienced Fight 2 Win veteran. It also seems like Craig Jones recent public statement of potentially not competing on SUG again may actually be true, as he’s absent from the event.
The main event will then see Mason Fowler defending the title that he won from, and defended against, Craig Jones across the two most recent SUG events. He will fight against another experienced MMA fighter in Satoshi Ishii, who also happens to be a Judo Olympic gold medalist. Ishii has fought the majority of his career in Japan and won a number of regional MMA titles, but will present a unique challenge to Fowler with his elite Judo background.
The full Submission Underground 19 event will be streamed live on 20th December on UFC FightPass, click here to subscribe and watch.
