Bellator 269 marked the promotion’s debut in Russia and although most of the attention was paid to the headline match featuring Fedor Emelianenko, it was Usman Nurmagomedov who was the real star of the event. As Khabib Nurmagomedov’s cousin, there’s always been a lot of expectation on Usman and so far he’s been living up to it every single step of the way. This was his third fight in the Bellator cage against increasingly challenging opposition but Nurmagomedov emerged victorious just like he has in both of those previous fights, and the other eleven of his professional career. Despite being just 23 years-old, he already holds a perfect 14-0 record and will likely continue this run for the foreseeable future.
It took no time at all for him to take the fight to the ground and as soon as he did, the difference in skill-level between him and Patrik Pietila was readily apparent. With less than two minutes gone on the clock, he locked up a tight rear-naked choke and forced Pietila to submit. The card also featured expert Judoka and Sambo practitioner Irina Alekseeva, affectionately referred to as ‘The Russian Ronda’, making her promotional debut and righting the ship with a dominant unanimous decision win against Stephanie Page.
