It was a truly bizarre turn of events but a 10th Planet tournament saw the very first instance of a double buggy choke in a competitive match. It started when one grappler was in bottom side control and decided to attempt what has quickly become one of the most popular chokes around, the buggy choke. The issue was that he attempted it on Derek Rayfield, who is known for the high level of proficiency he has in the choke himself. When it happened, Rayfield stayed perfectly calm and lifted his opponent off the mats to loosen the choke and allow himself some time to breathe.
From there, his opponent powered into him and managed to reverse the position, maintaining the buggy choke that he started out with but now without as much choking power as he was on top. That’s when Rayfield saw his golden opportunity and managed to secure a buggy choke of his own, resulting in both grapplers being tangled in an incredibly unusual double buggy choke position as the crowd went wild. From there, Rayfield’s opponent had to disentangle his own legs and although he tried to maintain top position and break free, he was forced to tap in the end.
This is all a testament to Rayfield’s inventiveness and his calm demeanor under pressure, both things that 10th Planet grapplers are often known for. No doubt his exposure to high level competition has helped his skills advance at a rapid pace over the last few years. He’s been a regular presence at Combat Jiu Jitsu events and even got his chance at glory just recently at the CJJ Middleweight World Championships, where he made it all the way to the final before losing in EBI overtime against fellow 10th Planet veteran Ryan Aitken.
