Keenan Cornelius is well-known across the world as one of the most successful BJJ competitors of his generation and he’s recently decided to share what he believes to be the secret behind rapid improvement in the sport. Cornelius is a seasoned competitor who has won almost everything there is to win over his years as an elite grappler and with his transition into a coaching role at his gym, Legion Jiu-Jitsu, he’s managed to form a phenomenal team of grapplers underneath him that look destined for huge success in the sport.
Just recently, Cornelius has been able to promote the very first batch of his students to black belt, starting with Miha Perhavec. There aren’t a huge number of people in the sport who are better-positioned to explain what they believe to be the secret behind rapid improvement in BJJ and of the ones that are, it’s highly likely that most would actually agree with Keenan Cornelius here. His opinions aren’t necessarily groundbreaking, but they’re certainly accurate for sure.
Keenan Cornelius made the announcement in a recent video that was uploaded to his official YouTube Channel, one where he also gave the aforementioned secret behind rapid improvement in BJJ a name: Deliberate Practice. In a nutshell, this method can be described as going into every single practice with certain goals in mind. This is something that’s most commonly done by focusing on a specific technique or set of options that a grappler wants to learn, and attempting to funnel all sparring matches into the appropriate area to try and get those techniques or options to work.
