The IBJJF World Championship 2024 took place from May 30th to June 2nd, 2024 and the results saw a new generation of world champions crowned. The first few days featured the best coloured belt prospect on the planet and several of them levelled up with their new titles. That meant that there were several new black belts ready for next year, including Cassia Moura; who finished her meteoric rise through the ranks just under a year after she won this tournament at blue belt.
There were plenty of interesting storylines in the black belt divisions as always, and Tainan Dalpra being disqualified was one of the most notable. That shocked the crowd and blew the middleweight division wide open, and Jackson Nagai took advantage of the opportunity to win his first world title. He wasn’t the only first-time champion though, as Carlos ‘Bebeto’ Oliveira won his first title at roosterweight and Yatan Bueno won his first at ultra-heavyweight.
Mica Galvao won his first world title at lightweight, although he was one of the few new champions that people predicted early on. Anderson Munis actually beat his own brother, absolute champion Erich Munis, to claim his first world title in the super-heavyweight division. Perhaps the most memorable new champion came in the heavyweight division, as Adam Wardzinski made history by becoming the first male European world champion. The surprises didn’t stop there though and the absolute division delivered chaos almost the entire way through.
Meyram Maquine won a bronze medal in the absolute despite winning the featherweight division on the same day, and Jansen Gomes got a silver medal there alongside his silver medal at medium-heavyweight. He lost his second final of the day to Gustavo Batista, who won his third title at that weight class. Diego ‘Pato’ Oliveira was the final champion in the men’s divisions, and he also won his third world title in the light-featherweight division.
The women’s divisions were a little less unpredictable, with several multiple-time world champions adding to their extensive collections. Gabrieli Pessanha led the way by winning both the super-heavyweight and absolute divisions for the fourth year in a row, finishing her third consecutive IBJJF grand slam as well. Mayssa Bastos and Andressa Cintra also continued their dominance, with both women picking up their fifth world titles in the roosterweight and middleweight divisions respectively.
Luiza Monteiro returned to the top of the podium for her third world title at lightweight, but other than that there were new champions in the women’s divisions. Thamires Aquino won an incredible bracket at light-featherweight, and Nathalie Ribeiro got a hard-earned gold medal at featherweight. Thamara Ferreira capped off a fantastic recent run by winning her first title at medium-heavyweight, while Tamiris Silva emerged as the heavyweight world champion.
