The results are in from the IBJJF World Championship 2023 after several days of high-level grappling action from June 1st to 4th, 2023. A new generation of world champions have been crowned and although some divisions went exactly as expected in early previews of the tournament, there were plenty of surprises along the way too. Perhaps one of the biggest surprises of the whole tournament came in the middleweight division, where Jansen Gomes defeated both Tye Ruotolo and the reigning champion Tainan Dalpra to claim gold.
While there were several success stories from the event and a champion in every single division, there were only two black belts who managed to leave with a pair of gold medals. That was because they won the absolute division along with their respective weight classes as well, the highest accomplishment a competitor can have at an event. Victor Hugo won the men’s ultra-heavyweight and absolute divisions, while Gabrieli Pessanha emerged victorious in the women’s super-heavyweight and absolute divisions.
