The IBJJF San Diego Spring Open 2024 took place on May 18th and 19th, 2024, and there was plenty of action for the crowd to enjoy. ATOS won the gi team trophy on the first day and one of the biggest driving forces behind their victory was one of their recently promoted black belt prospects, Brittney Johnson. She won gold medals in both the middleweight and absolute divisions, before returning on the second day and getting a pair of default gold medals. She wasn’t the only top female competitor standing on top of the podium and flying the ATOS flag though, as Amanda Bruse won the medium-heavyweight division.
Diana Teixeira was another female ATOS competitor at the event but she had to settle for a silver medal in the light-featherweight division after Lavinia Barbosa beat her to the top of the podium. Ronaldo Junior led the charge for the male ATOS black belts as he won the gold medal at medium-heavyweight, while the roosterweight division was won by Osamah Almarwai. The men’s absolute division provided plenty of entertainment too, and the final was a match that wouldn’t look out of place at a major event. Francisco Lo took the title after getting a default gold at middleweight and he beat Elder Cruz, the default heavyweight champion.
Art of Jiu-Jitsu had some great performances too, as Cole Abate beat Huthayfah Penney to take home the featherweight title and the light-featherweight division was an all-AOJ final. The gold medal there went to top contender Zach Kaina, while Jordan Vaisman settled for the silver medal instead. Checkmat black belt Dory Aoun actually stood out across both days of the IBJJF San Diego Spring Open 2024, as he won the no gi absolute division after getting a pair of silver medals in the gi medium-heavyweight division and the no gi heavyweight division. He beat elite competitor Alexandre Vieira in the final too, shortly after Vieira was given a default gold medal at featherweight.
