The IBJJF No Gi World Championship 2024 took place from December 12th to 14th, 2024 and the final major event of the year delivered some fantastic results. There were several competitors who won their very first no gi world title and some that managed to add yet another to their collection. There was plenty of big moments before the black belts even hit the mats too, with Olympic champion Helen Maroulis winning the blue belt lightweight division. She wasn’t the only elite wrestler who had to compete at the lowest colored belt rank thanks to IBJJF time restrictions either, although Pat Downey was disqualified in the final of the heavyweight division.
There were some amazing storylines leading into the black belt divisions though, starting out with Gabrieli Pessanha’s no gi debut. She has been utterly dominant in the gi for years at this point and many were wondering if she would be able to repeat that form under a new ruleset. Not only did Gabrieli Pessanha win the super-heavyweight division but just like she does at every gi tournament she enters, she won the absolute title as well. Brianna Ste-Marie stood next to her with a silver medal in the absolute, an impressive feat for someone who just took gold at lightweight on the same day.
Anabel Lopez was the final champion on the absolute podium, as she earned a bronze medal there after winning the heavyweight title. The men’s absolute champion was Elder Cruz, although he had to settle for a silver medal in the super-heavyweight division after losing out in the final to Marcos Carrozzino. The heaviest champion of the day was Lucas Montalvao though, as he stood on top of the podium at ultra-heavyweight. Another huge storyline was taking place in the women’s middleweight division, as Elisabeth Clay competing her amazing return to the sport by winning a world title a little under 4 months after giving birth to her first child.
There was also the rise of top prospect Cole Abate, who won the biggest title of his career by taking gold at featherweight. One of his teammates achieved the same feat at light-featherweight, as Zach Kaina stood on top of the podium there. Everton Teixeira was the lightest champion of the day when he retained his title at roosterweight, while the only other man to win the same division again was Lucas Valente at lightweight. With so many new champions there was plenty of surprises to be found in the brackets, but the biggest one came at medium-heavyweight as Wallisson Oliveira beat several elite opponents to win gold.
ADCC veterans Alexandre De Jesus and Felipe Costa each put in excellent performances in order to win their divisions as well, as they stood on top of the podium at middleweight and heavyweight respectively. There were plenty of surprises in the women’s divisions though, like Cassia Moura winning featherweight, and expected results, like Mayssa Bastos winning the light-featherweight title. Jhenifer Aquino won the lightest weight class at roosterweight, while the final champion at the higher end of the scale was Salla Simola at medium-heavyweight. There was elite grappling literally all week long and so many big names taken out in the earlier rounds without even making it to the podium.
