The IBJJF Brazilian National Championship (Brasileiro) 2024 took place from April 22nd to 28th, 2024 and the results saw a new class of champions crowned. There were several incredible performances from top competitors, perhaps most notably from Kennedy Maciel, who won the featherweight division and took home a bronze medal in the absolute. There was no double champion in the men’s divisions though, as Pedro Lucas won the absolute after an unsuccessful campaign in his regular weight class. Gabrieli Pessanha became the double champion in the women’s divisions once again, winning both the super-heavyweight and the absolute divisions in incredibly impressive fashion.
She wasn’t the only person who continued their run towards an IBJJF grand slam in 2024 either, as Mica Galvao put in yet another dominant display of elite grappling to win a gold medal in the middleweight division and roosterweight was won by Thalison Soares. Alongside them, Shelby Murphey and Thalyta Silva also won their third consecutive IBJJF major this year as they stood on top of the podium at roosterweight and middleweight respectively. There were several other predicted champions too, like Mayssa Bastos and Cleber Sousa in the men’s and women’s light-featherweight divisions.
Pedro Maia won gold at lightweight and Gabriel Costa won the medium-heavyweight division, but there was some unexpected results in the heaviest men’s divisions at the IBJJF Brazilian National Championship (Brasileiro) 2024. Patrick Gaudio delivered a great performance to win the heavyweight division and Henrique Betta won super-heavyweight, but the ultra-heavyweight division in particular ended in truly bizarre fashion. There actual final match ended in a double-disqualification after 8 minutes of inaction, so the two losing semi-finalists fought in a new final instead and Helder Junior ended up taking home the gold medal as a result.
Maria Luiza emerged as the women’s featherweight champion and it was Vitoria Vieira who won a challenging lightweight division after a tough final match against Brianna Ste-Marie. The final two women’s divisions were just as exciting as the rest of the tournament too, with medium-heavyweight delivering a series of entertaining matches until Sabatha Lais eventually won the title. The heavyweight division was won by Melissa Stricker, and she also had to beat some top-tier opponents in order to leave with another major IBJJF title.
