The first ever female IBJJF Grand Prix is just a matter of weeks away and the full lineup for the four-woman bracket has just been announced. As is customary for the event, it will feature four of the best grapplers in their weightclass and it will also be accompanied by a second Grand Prix that will take place in the men’s Medium-Heavyweight division. Both tournaments will award a $20,000 grand prize to the winner and a $3,000 consolation prize to the runner-up, something that has proven to be a fantastic motivation compared to the majority of IBJJF tournaments that feature little, if any, prize money at all.
Last year saw Tainan Dalpra and Victor Hugo walk away with the victories in their respective divisions and both men had to overcome incredibly tough opposition in doing so. This year will be no exception, as the sole men’s division will feature Leandro Lo, Ronaldo Junior, Gabriel Arges, and Mathias Luna. While Leandro Lo stands out as the early favourite, it’s incredibly difficult to pick a clear winner between these four men and all of them are capable of putting on a fantastic performance to beat the any of the others.
The female IBJJF Grand Prix will feature equally impressive talent in the form of Ffion Davies, Anna Rodrigues, Beatriz Mesquita, and Nathalie Ribeiro. Each of these four women are IBJJF world champions in their own right and are capable of submitting any of the best female competitors around at any moment. It also presents a great opportunity for some interesting rematches as most of these women have faced each other more than once in the past.
