Garry Tonon came into ONE FC: Big Bang with a perfect MMA record, having been undefeated in all five of his previous professional fights under the promotion’s banner. Tonon is undoubtedly one of the brightest stars of the submission grappling scene over the last few years and he’s known for putting on a fantastic show every time he steps onto the mats. He’s used these phenomenal skills on the ground to great effect throughout the start of his MMA career and had finished every one of his opponents up until his fight with Koyomi Matsushima at ONE FC: Big Bang.
The build-up to the fight saw plenty of attention on Tonon as news broke that John Danaher would be absent from his corner for the first time in his career, as a result of travel restrictions that Singapore had in place to cope with the Coronavirus pandemic. Then, during the pre-fight media day Tonon made a bold claim that he would emerge victorious in a grappling match between him and the recently-retired UFC Lightweight World Champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov. When all was said and done, Tonon put on a solid performance in earning a Unanimous Decision victory over Koyomi Matsushima and had every right to call for a title shot in the promotion after it.
After Garry Tonon had been declared the winner and extended his undefeated record to 6-0, he was given a microphone to make his case for a title shot. Before doing that though, he cut a promo reminiscent of 80’s WWE stars when he declared:
“Ripper, Tearer, Slasher, Gouger. I am the teeth in the darkness, the talons in the night. I am all that is strength, lust, and power. I am… Garry Tonon!”
