Fight 2 Win 149 was originally headlined by an exciting clash of styles between Keenan Cornelius and Gabriel Almeida, until Cornelius was forced out of the fight due to a back injury and replaced by a very game Manuel Ribamar. While the worm-guard king himself couldn’t attend, Legion Jiu-Jitsu came away with a phenomenal seven wins out of eight fights, including Conner DeAngelis and Sloan Clymer who both took home a shiny championship belt. In the main event, Manuel Ribamar was no doubt coming in confident after having beaten Almeida in all three of their previous matches, including one just last year under the very same promotion.

Ribamar immediately pulled guard but Almeida was far more aggressive than their previous meetings and pulled his opponent into a loose 50/50 with the added control over his lapel. Almeida then returned to his feet and engaged with Ribamar’s guard briefly, before both men decided to disengage and reset from standing. Ribamar sat back to guard briefly but decided to return to standing shortly after, this time it was Almeida who jumped to closed guard, opening it as he fell back. Ribamar used the momentary gap in his opponent’s guard to fight hard for a pass, although Almeida fought back to his feet again. Almeida jumped guard again and the pair nearly fell off the mat while Ribamar was working to pass, so the referee reset them to standing. Ribamar got the final guard-pull in and Almeida frantically worked to pass, but couldn’t manage to complete it as the time ran out.

In an incredibly close match, Almeida was awarded the decision victory and earned redemption against the man he’d so far been unable to beat. Elsewhere on the card, Edwin ‘Junny’ Ocasio and Luiza Monteiro both won titles with Ocasio taking a hard-fought split decision over Lucas Pinheiro while Monteiro dominated Jena Bishop in under three minutes, finishing with a collar choke. There was also a record-breaking 11-second submission that came courtesy of Max Danrely, the fastest there has ever been in a F2W black belt match. A slick response to his opponent sitting to guard, it seems like Danrely might be one to watch in future.
