The very first IBJJF Grand Prix for 2024 has just been announced and the promotion is wasting no time at all, as it will take place on February 29th, 2024. There’s no news yet on what weight classes will be on display, but the promotion has confirmed that there will be two different tournaments at the event. The IBJJF traditionally put together either one or two brackets at their Grand Prix events, although they generally only use one bracket of eight competitors when they’re staging an absolute tournament. That alone is a good indication that this will be a pair of four-person brackets in strict weight classes, rather than an openweight division.
As is usually the case for IBJJF Grand Prix events, this first edition in 2024 will also feature a series of superfights in between the rounds of each tournament. The promotion hasn’t announced any of the competitors in these single matches either, but if past events are anything to go by then they will be contested between pairs of elite grapplers. Some of the best BJJ competitors on the planet have stepped on the mats for superfights at IBJJF Grand Prix events, including the likes of Tainan Dalpra and Nathalie Ribeiro.
This next IBJJF Grand Prix will be taking place in Southern California too, and that means it’ll no doubt become an attractive event for the teams that are relatively nearby. With top teams like ATOS and Art of Jiu-Jitsu both pretty close to where the event will take place, that could be a sign that some of athletes entering the tournaments might be representing those two teams. With the amount of prestige and prize money available for winning an IBJJF Grand Prix, it’s likely that entrants from around the world will be eager to occupy a spot.
FloGrappling and the IBJJF both announced the news that they had scheduled the first IBJJF Grand Prix for 2024 in a recent post to their official Instagram accounts:
