Ary Farias is a two-time IBJJF World Champion and one of the best BJJ competitors available in MMA at 135 lbs. He managed to reach a new height in his competitive career as he claimed his first title on he regional MMA circuit by defeating Johnny Campbell at Taura MMA 10. This marks only the twelfth fight on Farias’ record and so far, he’s fought for a host of smaller MMA promotions based almost exclusively in Brazil, apart from a trip to America for LFA in 2019. Considering he’s finished his opponent in all but one of his wins so far, it shouldn’t be too long before the expert grappler attracts some attention from the major organisations.
His finish of Campbell to claim Taura MMA’s Interim Bantamweight title was an unusual one however, as the doctors rushed into the cage to stop the fight when it was noticed that Campbell’s ear was almost entirely detached. The fight lasted less than a minute and within that time, Farias had already knocked his opponent down and performed a slick transition to his back, landing shots along the way. One of those punches caused severe damage to his opponent’s ear and the fight was called in Ary Farias’ favor, bringing his total MMA record to 10-2.
The card was also supposed to contain the return of one of the most controversial figures in BJJ, Rousimar Palhares, but his replacement opponent withdrew only days after his initial booking also fell through. BJJ black belt and UFC veteran Sergio Moraes did manage to make an appearance, although he didn’t have a good night as he lost a unanimous decision to Jared Revel, his fourth loss in a row. The full fight video for Ary Farias’ victory was uploaded to Taura MMA’s official Twitter account and can be seen below, although it should go without saying that it contains some graphic images:
