Main Character Jiu-Jitsu 4 is scheduled for June 23rd, 2024 and the promotion has just announced that the main event will be a welterweight title-fight between Andy Varela and Jozef Chen. Although the rest of the matches have yet to be announced for the event, the promotion has confirmed that there will be plenty of action over the course of two days this time around. They will be hosting an open tournament the day before with several different divisions and the winner of the women’s flyweight division will get a title-shot on the main card, while Trinity Pun will also be returning to defend the featherweight title she won back at their first event.
It’s a great matchup between two of the top grapplers in that weight class and it also offers both men the opportunity to get an impressive win over a big name. Varela is a much more established competitor of course, as he’s been representing 10th Planet at the highest level of the sport for several years now. He had an impressive ADCC Trials run in 2022 that saw him leave with a silver medal and although he didn’t win the tournament, he was still given an invite to ADCC 2022 thanks to his exciting style and the wins he registered over elite competitors.
Varela made his promotional debut at ADCC 2022 and although he went out in the opening round of his weight class on the first day, he was given a second chance and returned on the next day anyway to compete in the absolute division. Unfortunately he went out in the opening round again after facing a huge size disadvantage against Nicky Rodriguez. Chen was a relative unknown at that point in time but he has since burst into the highest level of the sport after having a breakthrough performance that saw him win gold at the ADCC European Trials in 2023.
Main Character Jiu-Jitsu announced the news that Andy Varela and Jozef Chen would be competing for their welterweight title in the main event of Main Character Jiu-Jitsu 4 in a recent post to their official Instagram account.
