ATOS founder and head coach Andre Galvao has just announced his intention to return to professional MMA competition after signing a multi-fight deal with a major promotion. Galvao has remained tight-lipped on exactly who he has signed the deal with, and the options truly are limitless as any top-tier promotion would be overjoyed to be able to stage his return to MMA. This isn’t the first news of Galvao’s comeback, as he previously hinted at wanting to return to the cage almost a year ago but without any contract signed.
It’s been over a decade since Andre Galvao last competed in MMA and he managed to amass a 5-2 professional record over his relatively short-lived career. His career spanned between 2008 and 2010, with him starting out by winning two fights on the regional circuit before entering the DREAM welterweight grand prix and winning his first round fight against John Alessio. He ended up losing a close split decision to Jason High in the next round and moved over to StrikeForce instead, defeating both Luke Stewart and Jorge Patino in his first two fights.
It was then in December 2010 that Galvao had his final MMA fight against future-UFC welterweight world champion Tyron Woodley and suffered his most devastating loss. Galvao was knocked out in the first round of their fight and chose to switch back to Jiu-Jitsu competition shortly afterward. Throughout his MMA career, Galvao not only used his elite BJJ skills to win fights but he also combined it with a quickly developing level of wrestling that allowed him to take the fight where he wanted.
There’s no news yet on who Andre Galvao will be fighting upon his return or what promotion he will be fighting for but Jiu-Jitsu fans will be hoping that his MMA comeback doesn’t interfere with his superfight championship match against Gordon Ryan at ADCC 2022. Despite being the reigning champion and having defended his title on three separate occasions since winning it from Braulio Estima back in 2013, Galvao is actually still the underdog against Ryan according to recently released betting lines.
