The Abu Dhabi World Pro 2024 took place across November 14th to 16th, 2024 and this a select handful of elite competitors have left the tournament with the results they needed to become world champions. There were plenty of surprises as the tournament progressed, starting out with some unexpected winners in the qualifying brackets in the opening days. Many people would have thought that the favorites would shine by the time that the main brackets took place, but there were still plenty of underdogs rising to the top. The women’s brown and black belts were particularly unpredictable, and the majority of champions were actually young brown belt competitors.
The two most stacked men’s divisions were at light-featherweight and featherweight and the winners there both fought their way through the Brazilian qualifying bracket first. The champions were Thalison Soares and Jefferson Fagundes respectively, and they had to win 8 and 6 matches each to take home their titles. They weren’t the only ones who had to get through a ton of opponents though, as Lucas Protasio also beat 8 men to win gold at welterweight. Uanderson Ferreira had a memorable run at middleweight for different reasons, as he ended the week with a very high finishing-rate by submitting three out of his four opponents.
Fellipe Andrew was a predictable winner at light-heavyweight, while Felipe Bezerra emerged victorious after 3 tough matches at super-heavyweight. The top men’s divisions were only available to black belts, but the mixed brown and black belt divisions for women produced plenty of unexpected results. Yara Soares and Maria Delahaye were the only black belts to win gold there, as they stood on top of the podium at heavyweight and middleweight respectively. Grasielle Brandao delivered particularly memorable results at the Abu Dhabi World Pro 2024, as the 22 year-old won 3 out of 4 matches in a round-robin Brazilian qualifier and beat 3 women in a row in the main roosterweight bracket to win gold.
The other two champions in the women’s divisions were teenagers, and they both made it clear that they will be forces to be reckoned with in the future. 18 year-old Canadian brown belt Lillian Marchand submitted three out of four of her elite opponents to win the light-featherweight division, including ADCC veteran Nikki Lloyd-Griffiths. The lightweight division was won by Marchand’s teammate at ATOS and fellow 18 year-old competitor, Sarah Galvao. A lot of expectation has been put on Galvao in recent years thanks to her being the daughter of BJJ legend Andre Galvao, but she more than lived up to it here by beating 4 tough opponents in a row.
