One of the greatest Jiu-Jitsu athletes to ever step foot in the cage suffered a devastating loss at UFC 262 as Andre Muniz submitted Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza for the very first time ever, and appeared to break his arm in the process. Despite the end result, things were actually going pretty well for Souza in the beginning of his fight with Muniz as he managed to work some good striking against the cage and even land an early takedown. Muniz started to regroup very quickly however and land a few takedowns of his own as Souza struggled to stay on his feet.

It was during a scramble in one of these exchanges that Muniz found the opening to take Souza’s back, although the two-time ADCC world champion was able to fend off the choke attempt and shrug him off relatively quickly. As Muniz lost his control over Souza’s back, he quickly switched his attack to an armbar and hipped into it immediately, as the crowd and commentators heard a sickening pop coming from Souza’s arm. Muniz let go of the submission immediately and the referee rushed over to call an end to the fight, declaring Muniz the victor by technical submission.

This injury might signal the end of the road for Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza, as the legendary grappler was already riding a three-fight skid coming into this fight, and is already at the age of 41. He’s already been making moves to prepare for his inevitable retirement, including starting plans to open up his very first Jiu-Jitsu gym. Given that this injury will likely keep him out of competition for quite some time, and he’s already been vocal about the fact that he could earn the same money teaching Jiu-Jitsu as he does competing in MMA, it seems like the time could be right for Souza to step away from the sport for good.
