UFC legend Jon Jones recently decided to join Gordon Ryan for a grappling training session, and they shared the footage with the general public. While Jones is undoubtedly one of the greatest MMA fighters in the history of the sport, he’s also worked hard over the years in order to develop his skills in every single area of combat sports. Ryan on the other hand is a grappling specialist and his time has been spent solely dedicated to developing his skills for use in professional grappling competition. That’s what has led to Ryan becoming the greatest no gi grappler on the planet and a training session with him is going to be a challenging one for anyone.
It’s these kinds of training sessions that have helped mold Jones into the fighter he has become though, because training with the best on the planet in their respective sports has only made him better at MMA. Jones hasn’t just stuck to fighting in professional MMA over the years either, as he’s tested himself in grappling competition several times over the years as well. He’s been relatively inactive in recent years on both fronts though and has only fought once since 2020, although this was his fight against Cyril Gane that saw him claim the UFC heavyweight world championship.
That fight saw Jon Jones use his elite grappling to become a double champion and make history, something he also has in common with Gordon Ryan. Ryan first won an ADCC title at 88kg back in 2017 before returning in 2019 to become a double-champion at 99kg and in the absolute division. That alone would have been enough for Ryan to secure his legacy forever, but he broke a record at ADCC 2022 when he won the under 99kg division and became the only champion of three different weight classes. He also defeated Andre Galvao to win the superfight championship at the event, bringing his total number of titles to an incredible five.
