Vinny Magalhaes has just become the latest person to be added to the ADCC Hall of Fame as part of the 2024 class of inductees. He is the fifth member of this group and although they’ve all been announced now, they will only be officially inducted into the Hall of Fame at ADCC 2024. Magalhaes has been a frequent competitor on the ADCC mats and a frequent sight on the podium, ever since he first received an invite to the world’s most prestigious no gi grappling tournament all the way back in 2009.
Magalhaes put in a fantastic performance on his very first attempt in 2009, going 6-2 over the course of two days and ending up with bronze medals in both the under 99kg division and the absolute division. Although it was impressive back then, that performance has only gotten even better with age as his only losses came against fellow ADCC Hall of Famer Xande Ribeiro in his weight class and another ADCC Hall of Famer Braulio Estima in the absolute. This meant that he was a guaranteed invite in the next edition of ADCC in 2011, and he managed to improve on his standing even more this time around.
Magalhaes moved up in weight to over 99kg in 2011 and won gold, beating another member of the ADCC Hall of Fame 2024 class, Fabricio Werdum, in the final. Although he went out in the second round of the absolute that year, going 5-1 was still an impressive feat regardless. Magalhaes went 1-1 at his weight in 2013 before returning to the podium in 2015 with a bronze medal in the over 99kg division and a final attempt at the absolute, where he went out in the second round.
Magalhaes hasn’t entered the absolute since then, but he went 1-1 at over 99kg in 2017 and 2-1 at under 99kg in 2019 before going out in the first round of ADCC 2022 due to an injury he suffered in the match. Assuming Vinny Magalhaes doesn’t return again now that he’s a member of the ADCC Hall of Fame, he finishes out his career for the promotion with a 19-9 record. That includes a gold medal and three bronze medals over the course of 14 years on the mats, and Magalhaes will go down in history as an incredible ADCC competitor.
