Third Coast Grappling Kumite 7 marked the first in a series of events put on by the American promotion to feature an all-female cast and the results speak for themselves. The women delivered just as much, if not more high-level action than the last 6 men’s events and the eventual winner was crowned the 3CG Kumite champion, walking away with a $10,000 prize. The event also featured a pair of elite superfights between four of the best big men in the sport right now as Gustavo Batista took on Vinicius “Trator” Ferreira and Lucas “Hulk” Barbosa took on Guilherme Augusto.

The opening round of the Kumite saw two really impressive performances as Ana Vieira dominated the late-replacement Victoria Montrezor, winning via Technical Fall after amassing a huge points lead. On the other side of the bracket, Luiza Monteiro really put the pressure on Jessica Swanson all throughout their match before taking her back and securing the finish right at the end. The other two opening round matches were incredibly close affairs that had to be decided by a final points-scoring sweep in the overtime round.

The semi-finals then saw a brutal finish as Luiza Monteiro was working to pass the guard of Nathiely De Jesus. She managed to latch on to a Toehold and while De Jesus was defending expertly, she quickly switched to a Kneebar and fully extended her leg for the tap. Then it was Vieira’s turn to book her place in the final as she had the closest match of he night against Nathalie Ribeiro. Neither woman was able to take the lead on points and neither could score in the overtime period which took the match to a judge’s decision, them seeming to favor the heavy guard-passing and takedown attempts of Vieira.

In the final, Vieira managed to repeat her previous display after Monteiro pulled guard and started to work for sleeve and lapel grips. The majority of the match was characterized by a number of passing attempts by Vieira which nearly saw her on her opponent’s back before Monteiro escaped to standing. Both women attempted a takedown before the time ran out and the overtime period saw a similar story as the main round. Monteiro pulled guard early and Vieira was working to pass before sitting back for an Ankle Lock attempt as the time ran out. The beautiful guard-passing work and owning the only submission attempt of the match seemed more than enough for Vieira to be awarded the crown and cash prize.
