Thamara Ferreira is one of the top female BJJ competitors on the planet right now and she’s just switched teams in order to train at the Caio Terra Academy under the legendary athlete who founded the team. Terra is one of the best lighter weight competitors to ever set foot on the mats, and he won two IBJJF World Championships and ten IBJJF no gi World Championships during his time as an active competitor. There are few coaches on the planet who have accomplished as much in the sport as Terra and Ferreira really couldn’t be in much safer hands than that of the 4th degree BJJ black belt.

Ferreira is a black belt under Cicero Costha and originally represented his team, racking up some impressive wins during her time doing so. She won the IBJJF World Championship in both gi and no gi at brown belt before being promoted, and has won both the IBJJF Pan Championship and the IBJJF European Championship since then. She’s reached the podium of the world championships twice already at black belt and it’ll be interesting to see if working with Terra can give her the final push to take home a gold medal from the tournament this year.

Caio Terra commented on the news shortly after it was announced, explaining his approach to building his team at the Caio Terra Academy and welcoming Thamara Ferreira into the team:

“In this day and age, where teams actively recruit athletes, I believe in a different approach. Athletes who join our team have to believe in what we are trying to build and although they may have different goals, the “one team” philosophy is how we are able to go farther. They put their trust in me, and I believe in them, together we will do great things. Welcome to CTA, Thamara Ferreira, let’s go!!”

The news that Thamara Ferreira was changing teams to represent the Caio Terra Academy and train under Terra himself was announced in a post to her official Instagram account. She announced the news in Portuguese, and the translation can be found below:

“Starting today I get to represent Caio Terra Academy. I am aware of my potential, I know I am different. To this day I still don’t feel stoned, and I don’t think I’ve explored my full potential either. I believe this big guy will help me with this. Once again I’m in good hands Thank you Caio Terra. Let’s get our year started!”
