Subversion: Origin 2 took place on July 20th, 2024 and there were plenty of great results throughout the night but the team battle was particularly thrilling. There were beautiful finishes and exciting matches in both the preliminary and main card, with Vinicius Martins standing out for his clean armbar from mount against Lucas Lacerda. His submission win actually led straight into the series of matches between the elite competitors representing Team Australia and Team Brazil. The Brazilian grapplers started out strong in the first meeting, with Isabelle Costa getting the split decision win over Hope Tabak in the only women’s match of the main card.

The second match of the team battle was one of the most entertaining of the entire night, and Joao Marco caused the crowd to erupt when he finished the rear-naked choke on Hugh Boyd with just 19 seconds left on the clock. Marco’s win took Team Brazil to 2-0 and all the pressure was on top competitor Ariel Tabak to keep Team Australia’s hope alive in the third match. He hit a really slick backstrep entry in to the saddle from top position against Felippe Beltrao, locking up a heel hook to get the finish and bring the score to 2-1.

David Stoilescu was up next for Team Australia in the co-main event and he was relentless in his match against Rian de Paula, constantly hunting the finish. He eventually got the heel hook he was looking for and his submission win levelled the score to 2-2, meaning that it all came down to the final match of the night. ADCC veteran Josh Saunders was the final man sent out for Team Australia in the main event, and he submitted Augusto Cursino with a heel hook not long after the match hit the ground. That put the final score at 3-2 and the Australian competitors had finished on a high note, staging an epic comeback to get the win over Team Brazil.
