Tayane Porfirio has just stepped in to replace Nathiely De Jesus in the super-heavyweight division of The Crown on November 19th, 2023. She joins an incredible roster of competitors who are among the very best in their respective weight classes at the event. The women’s super-heavyweight division in particular has most of the biggest names imaginable, and Porfirio will undoubtedly be meeting some stiff competition on the mats. She is coming in on just 12 day’s notice so she doesn’t have much chance to prepare, but elite grapplers like Porfirio are essentially always ready to compete.
The brackets for The Crown have already been confirmed and assuming that Porfirio is taking De Jesus’ place without them being re-ordered, we already know who her first match will be. She will face Melissa Stricker Cueto in the opening round of the tournament and if she manages to make it to the final after that, she’ll come up against either Gabrieli Pessanha or Amy Campo. This isn’t the first time that Porfirio has shared the mats with some of these women of course, and most recently three out of four of them competed at BJJ Stars 11.
Although she was in that bracket alongside Cueto and Pessanha, she didn’t actually get to face either of them. Porfirio went out in the semi-final of BJJ Stars 11, while those two met in the same round but on the other side of the bracket. Regardless of how Tayane Porfirio ends up doing at The Crown, she’ll undoubtedly bring plenty of entertainment for the fans. It’ll be interesting to see if both she and Pessanha can make it to the final, as Porfirio is one of the few women to beat her in competition and currently holds a 1-2 record against her. That would definitely be an epic match that might even end up being part of a fierce rivalry over the next few years.
