Tammi Musumeci has booked her next match against Amanda ‘Tubby’ Alequin and it will take place at ONE Fight Night 12 on July 14th, 2023. This won’t be the first time that the two women have crossed paths either, as they have previously competed in the 115lbs division at the Who’s Number One Championships against one another. They actually had two matches at the event, as they used a double-elimination format. Musumeci defeated Alequin in the opening round of the tournament by unanimous decision before repeating that feat in the third-place playoff in order to take home the bronze medal.
Musumeci is the more accomplished out of the two, as she won an IBJJF world championship in 2019 and four IBJJF no gi world championship gold medals between 2015 and 2022. Alequin has reached the same level of success in the past though, as she actually stood on top of the podium in the no gi edition of the world championship on one of the same years as Musumeci. Back in 2016, both women put on impressive displays and reach the top of the mountain as Musumeci won the lightweight division and Alequin won the middleweight division.
Both Tammi Musumeci and Amanda ‘Tubby’ Alequin have been signed to ONE Championship for quite some time, so the rematch was almost inevitable. Musumeci had a successful debut for the promotion back at ONE Fight Night 8, where she defeated Bianca Basilio in an incredibly close match that went to a judge’s decision. Alequin was supposed to make her debut against Jessa Khan back in 2022 but unfortunately for both women, that match fell through. She hasn’t been inactive since then by any stretch of the imagination though, as she actually recently defeated up-and-coming star Alex Enriquez at the most recent Who’s Number One event.
Musumeci has been open about having some big goals in competing for ONE Championship in the past, including holding two of the promotion’s submission grappling titles eventually. It’ll take a while for her to achieve this of course, but beating Alequin at ONE Fight Night 12 on July 14th, 2023 would go a long way towards earning her a shot at the first title.
