Submission Underground 21 saw the return of tag-team Jiu-Jitsu for the promotion as Ricky Simon and John Simon represented ATT against Willie Audifre and Mike Currier, who were representing Team GFC. That match served as the midway point of the main card shortly after Andy Varela managed to defeat Olympic Judo Champion Satoshi Ishii, and ex-Bellator Flyweight World Champion Ilima-Lei Macfarlane made a successful debut for SUG against the more experienced Jessica Eye.
The final two matches of the main card marked the first time that both of the promotion’s absolute titles would be defended on the same night, starting with Amanda Loewen defending against grappling veteran Roxanne Modafferi. As with most matches of the event, neither of the pair were unable to register a submission victory within the regulation time period and the match would go the distance. Loewen did managed to lock up a lightning-fast armbar in the first round of EBI overtime in order to retain her title however.
The main event then saw one of only two finishes inside regulation time, as Mason Fowler looked to defend his absolute title against Richie Martinez only a week before he competes in the Third Coast Grappling 6 Grand Prix. There was less than twenty seconds left of the round when Fowler managed to set up an Armbar on Martinez and secure the tap before the buzzer sounded. That meant neither absolute title switched hands on the night, and both Loewen and Fowler will be back for future SUG events to give two more competitors the chance to become a champion.
