The IBJJF Curitiba Summer Open 2023 took place on March 11th and 12th, with several Brazilian competitors putting on great performances. Naturally, the tournament attracted some of the best talent that the country has to offer and several world champions took to the mats to compete. One of the most impressive performances came from Pedro Alex, who left the tournament with four medals after reaching the podium of his weight and the absolute division both in the gi and in no gi. He came within inches of a perfect weekend as he won two gold medals in the gi and a gold in the no gi absolute, but had to settle for silver in the no gi ultra-heavyweight division after losing to Antonio de Padua.
Reigning ADCC world champion Diogo Reis was a surprising name to see in the tournament and he was a clear favourite to win the featherweight division, especially because of the incredible performance he put on at ADCC 2022 last year. Reis dominated both in the gi and out of it, winning two gold medals in impressive fashion. Servio Tulio put in some great work at medium-heavyweight, winning gold in the no gi division while Mauricio Oliveira managed the same feat in the gi division. Erich Munis was another top male competitor in attendance and he also managed to win gold at his weight, beating out stiff competition at super-heavyweight.
Karen Terra emerged as the best of the women’s lightweight division by winning two gold medals and although there weren’t many women competing in other no gi divisions, Mikaela Barros won the absolute division. Thalyta Silva emerged as the best female gi competitor of the IBJJF Curitiba Summer Open 2023 by winning gold at middleweight and in the absolute division, where she had to beat Barros in the final. All in all it was a great weekend of competition, and some of the biggest names in Brazil put on a show for those in attendance.
