Rener Gracie has become known for his famous Gracie Breakdown videos over the years, and he just released one to explain why Charles Oliveira wasn’t able to finish his two submission attempts against Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 300. Although he might be a controversial figure in the BJJ community for a number of different reasons, Rener Gracie’s knowledge of grappling is not in dispute. He’s already spent more time on the mats than the majority of BJJ black belts will over their entire life and he registered wins over some incredible grapplers during his short-lived competitive career.

Both Charles Oliveira and Arman Tsarukyan had periods of success in their three-round war at UFC 300, but Rener Gracie was more focused on two submission attempts that many fans thought might signal the end of the fight in the moment. The first submission threat came early in the first round, when Tsarukyan slipped and Oliveira pounced on a guillotine attempt that looked incredibly tight. Tsarukyan looked in danger for a moment but he was able to work his way free and although he ended up underneath Oliveira’s mount as a result. He survived some hard elbows from there and made it out, losing the round but earning the opportunity to make a comeback.

Tsarukyan actually won the grappling exchanges in their second round and managed to tie things up heading into the final five minutes of their fight. It was late in the third and final round that Oliveira had his second deep submission attempt, as he locked up a D’arce Choke with very little time left on the clock. Tsarukyan flattened his body out and survived until the end of the bell, with two judges awarding him the round and the fight as a result. Rener Gracie walked his fans through some minor adjustments that Oliveira could have made to help finish the guillotine, and a method of breaking down that defense to the D’arce Choke.

Rener Gracie shared the Gracie Breakdown of UFC 300 where he explains why Charles Oliveira wasn’t able to submit Arman Tsarukyan in a recent post to his official Twitter account:
